What we cover

We publish four kinds of article: process explainers that cover how welding actually works, step-by-step guides for getting a clean result, safety writing about PPE and working practice, and buying guides comparing gear we would use ourselves.

How we check what we publish

Nobody writing here is a certified welder, and you should know that before you take advice from us. We think the honest response to that is not to imply otherwise, but to show our working.

Every technical figure in these guides — lens shade numbers, gas flow rates, amperage, protective standards — is checked against the organisation that sets it or the manufacturer’s own documentation, and those sources are listed at the foot of the guide so you can check us. Where a standard and your machine’s manual disagree, follow the manual: it is specific to your equipment.

None of this replaces instruction. Welding is learned with the hood down beside someone who can see what you are doing. What we can do is make sure that when you look something up, the number you find here is the number the standard actually says.

If we have got something wrong, tell us. We will correct it and say that we did.

How we approach reviews

Where a product has a weakness, we say so — a review that finds nothing wrong with anything is not a review. We never accept payment in exchange for a recommendation or a score, and we do not claim to have bench-tested gear we have not.
